  • Soil Type: Rooted in Etna's volcanic sands, 30-40 year old Carricante and Grecanico vines benefit from nutrient-rich, porous soils, imparting a pronounced mineral core and delicate complexity to the wine.
  • Elevation: Situated at 850 meters, the vineyard's elevation contributes to slow ripening, infusing the wine with vibrant acidity and a fresh aromatic profile.
  • Grape Varieties: A blend of 95% Carricante and 5% Grecanico harmonizes structural elegance with aromatic softness, creating a complex yet approachable wine.
  • Winemaking: Cold maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by aging on lees in neutral casks for 6-8 months, enhance the wine's texture and depth.
  • Farming Practices: Adhering to 100% organic farming, the Calcagnos' approach ensures sustainability and reflects their dedication to terroir-driven wines.
  • Tasting Notes: Layers of citrus blossom, golden apple, and peach on the nose, with a palate of lemon curd, white peach, and flinty minerality, culminating in a crisp finish.
  • Pairing: Ideal with seafood, especially dishes with citrus or herbaceous accents, enhancing the wine's vibrant character.
  • About the Producer: The Calcagno brothers and winemaker Alessandro Bianco's deep connection to their land elevates Calcaneus Ginestra Etna Bianco as a standout wine from Etna, offering incredible value.

The Mount Etna wine region, dramatically draped across three sides of the active Etna volcano in Sicily, is distinguished by its striking variation in elevation and the rich mosaic of volcanic soils. These unique conditions foster the cultivation of vines at altitudes ranging from a few hundred meters above sea level to over 1,000 meters, creating microclimates that yield wines of profound complexity and minerality. The region's wines, most notably those made from the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grape varieties, are celebrated for their ability to capture the essence of Etna's fiery terroir in each bottle.

    Mount Etna

Native to Sicily's Mount Etna, Carricante is a high acid white grape known for minerality. It's at its best on the east slope of the volcano, showing saltiness and texture with ample acidity to age for decades.
