  • Land: The Benanti Etna Rosso 2021 is sourced from vineyards on the eastern and southern slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, benefiting from high altitudes and significant sunlight. These vines, aged between 10 and 60 years, are rooted in mineral-rich volcanic sands, contributing to the wine's distinctive character. Despite challenges like powdery mildew in spring and water stress in summer, traditional vineyard management ensured healthy grapes. The autumn rains complemented the growing season without harming the fruit, with the harvest concluding in mid-October.
  • Wine: This Etna Rosso is a blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio, vinified separately. The grapes, hand-picked in October, undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, with a portion of the Nerello Mascalese also maturing in oak barriques. The wine showcases a pale ruby color, an ethereal and intense scent with red fruit hints, and a balanced, medium-bodied palate with mineral notes, pleasant acidity, saline touches, and persistent red fruit aromas.
  • People: The Benanti family's winemaking heritage dates back to the late 1800s, with Giuseppe Benanti founding the modern winery in 1988. Today his two sons run the winery, and together they can be largely credited for Etna becoming a globally known wine region.

The Mount Etna wine region, dramatically draped across three sides of the active Etna volcano in Sicily, is distinguished by its striking variation in elevation and the rich mosaic of volcanic soils. These unique conditions foster the cultivation of vines at altitudes ranging from a few hundred meters above sea level to over 1,000 meters, creating microclimates that yield wines of profound complexity and minerality. The region's wines, most notably those made from the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Carricante grape varieties, are celebrated for their ability to capture the essence of Etna's fiery terroir in each bottle.

Mount Etna

Named for its pale color and hometown of Mascali, Nerello Mascalese is a rising star in the wine world. Indigenous to Mount Etna, it was overlooked for decades until recently the world has taken notice of the elegant yet powerfully minerally wines produced on the volcanic slopes. Think halfway between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo.
